Introducing the New Mixed Methods Importer Tool for HyperRESEARCH
The Mixed Methods Importer tool for HyperRESEARCH allows you to import data from a spreadsheet or other tabular data file into a HyperRESEARCH study. The imported data may be quantitative, qualitative, or a mix (e.g. results from a survey containing quantitative variables with qualitative content from open-ended questions). HyperRESEARCH uses the data to create cases and a code book, and automatically codes the quantitative variables and qualitative content.
How Does it Work?
By reading each row of data from your data file and creating a text source file for that row, the Mixed Methods Importer tool automatically generates a source file that is then coded in accordance with the settings you select. The coding, with links to the source material, is saved to a HyperRESEARCH study file for use in HyperRESEARCH.
Here's what the Mixed Methods Importer will do for you:
Give you a jump start on your qualitative and mixed methods research by creating a HyperRESEARCH study drawn from your survey data or other tabular data. Specifically, the Mixed Methods Importer will:
- Create a case for each respondent (or whatever is represented by each row of data in your data file)
- Create a text source file for each case, with the survey labels and responses for that case in the text file
- Add code groups to your code book (one code group for each survey data field you flag to be treated as a "Filter" - e.g. "Employment Status")
- Add codes containing the variable responses in your "Filter" data fields to your code book (e.g. "Employment Status - Employed") and to the relevant code group
- Apply appropriate code references to the source data linking the information provided by each data cell to the relevant case with a code reflecting that data
What this means for you:
Import tabular data from files in a variety of delimited text formats, including Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet software format (XLSX), comma-separated values (CSV), tab-separated (TSV), and custom file formats. In minutes, your data will be accessible to all of HyperRESEARCH's features and tools:
- Open the automatically-created study and begin analysis on it, or merge your data with an existing HyperRESEARCH study
- Use Filter Cases by Criteria to examine subsets of your data based on the presence or absence of the automatically created and applied variable codes (e.g. "Gender" having a value of Male or Female)
- Run Frequency Reports to access the quantitative data in your study
- Search Sources to find keywords in your data
- Use the Word Counter to explore the qualitative responses from your mixed methods data (set the quantitative variables and their values to be ignored)
- Use the Theory Builder to test your theories against your data, including your quantitative variables
Code additional qualitative data at any time. It's as easy as opening a source file, selecting some source material, and applying a code!
