How can I code MPEG-2 video in HyperRESEARCH?

NOTE: This FAQ refers to HyperRESEARCH version 3.7.5 and older. Please upgrade to HyperRESEARCH version 4.5.x, which does not rely on Apple's Quicktime technology (now no longer supported by Apple and hence a security issue).

HyperRESEARCH uses Apple Computer's QuickTime technology for the playback of audio or video. QuickTime does not natively support MPEG-2 as a video format.

However, Apple offers a MPEG-2 playback component for Mac OS X and Windows, which is available for purchase online at the Apple Store:
For Macintosh, see http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A
For Windows, see http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2189Z/A

The QuickTime MPEG-2 component has some limitations. Please see the full details on the Apple web site. The MPEG-2 component supports the playback of MPEG-2 files (.mpg, .mpeg, .vob, .vro, .m2v, .m2a, and .m2s) that contain MPEG audio layers I or II. The MPEG-2 component does not support audio playback for MPEG-2 files containing PCM, DTS, or AC3 audio.

If you have MPEG-2 video content you want to use as source material, and it is not supported by the QuickTime MPEG-2 component, you can convert the video to another supported video format. A wide variety of free and low-cost tools are available for both Mac OS X and Windows to convert video from MPEG-2 to another format supported by QuickTime, such as MPEG-4.

Do You Know...

... that if you use HyperTRANSCRIBE to create your transcriptions, you can use the document as a source in HyperRESEARCH? The transcription can be coded just like any other text document, and a pane at the top of the window shows the original video or audio file. Click a time code in the transcription to go to that point in the video or audio, and play it while scanning and coding the text.

By using a HyperTRANSCRIBE document, you can get all the benefits of working with a text transcript (precision, easy scanning, searchability) while keeping the benefits of having the original media file (emotional context and subtleties that may not come through in a transcription). Work with all your senses and with multiple modalities, to get new insights and better mastery of the source material.
