I'm having some trouble as I code audio interviews (1.5 hrs each) in HyperResearch, and so far, I've been unable to find a workaround or the correct keystrokes to invest my time most effectively.

My process: Open my audio source - navigate (using arrow keys, mouse, and playing the audio file) to start of selection - keyboard crtl+[ to mark beginning of section - continue to play audio - keyboard crtl+] to mark end - apply code.

My problem: While I can continue to play the audio file from that point within the source window, I can't mark off a new section to code, even when deselecting all codes in the case window. I'm forced to close the audio source, re-open it, find where I left off, and then mark my new section of audio to code. Repeat.

This is incrediably cumbersome, and I can't be the only one with this issue. I just just to be able to listen to the audio and code as I go. This seems to be a simple thing, so perhaps I'm missing the correct keystrokes or process.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Jeremy. Do you have the "Limit Playback to Selection" checkbox turned off? (It's at the top of the video window.)

When you try to mark the start of a new segment to code, does the "Start" point at the top of the window change to the current point in the video, or does it stay the same (ignoring your Control-[ keystroke)?

"Limit playback" is off, though I've tried it both ways just to be sure.

And yes, the start and end boxes which display the timings ignore my ctrl+[ and ctrl+] commands.

Still not luck working on my own, playing with various combinations. I'm nearly to the point of using random keystrokes. Surely there is a way to do what I described? It would be fairly silly to force users to cut up interviews into a hundred little segments...

I was able to only partially replicate this problem. When I opened an audio file (length didn't seem to matter) and made an initial selection and coded it, the greyed section on the audio playback bar indicating the selection remained (greyed) after I coded. I then turned off Limit Playback to Selection to play past the current selection. If I tried to use ctrl-[ to mark the new start of a selection, it just moved the previous grey bar to the new start instead of clearing the old selection and allowing me to start a new one.

Is this specifically what it happening to you? If so, there is a work around. Just click on the playback bar just behind the previous grey selection. This will clear the selection. You can then play froward from that point and code as normal.

Okay - I was finally able to replicate this specific problem under Windows 7 with the latest version of Quicktime. Under some circumstances, the Ctrl-[ and Ctrl-] for mark start and end respectively cease to work. Fortunately, Quicktime has an alternative key sequence for marking strat and end points of selection. With the audio window selected, you can press "i' for marking the "In" point or Start and "o" for marking the End point or "Out" of a selection.

I'm sorry this took so long to troubleshoot. While the problem was painfully repeatable for you, it proved a bit elusive to track down. The problem appears under Windows 7 and, possibly only under certain circumstances I haven't quite been able to pin down. But using "i" and "o" for in and out points of a selection works under Windows XP, Vista, and 7 consistantly, so this shoudl solve the problem for you.

Please post back a not to let us know if this work-around resolves the issue.

Thanks for your investigation, Paul. Yes, it was pretty painful, no? I tried a variety of processes to solve the problem before posting to this forum, spending more time than I would like. Ah well. At least it appears you have identified a workaround.
